2 Unit 1—Academic Vocabulary synthesis: the act of combining ideas from different sources to create, express, or support a new idea perspective: a way of looking at the world or a mental concept about things or events, one that judges relationships within or among things or events argument: a form of writing that presents a particular opinion or idea and supports it with evidence claim: a thesis statement describing the position the writer is taking on an issue counterclaim: a position taken by someone with an opposing viewpoint concession: an admission in an argument that the opposing side has valid viewpoints refutation: the reasoning used to disprove an opposing point

3 Unit 1—Literary Terms voice: a writer’s or speaker’s distinctive use of language to express ideas as well as his or her persona syntax: the arrangement of words and the order of grammatical elements in a sentence; the way in which words are put together to make meaningful elements such as phrases, clauses, and sentences conflict: a struggle or problem in a story theme: the writer’s central idea or main message about life thematic statement: an interpretive statement articulating the central meaning of a text allusion: a reference made to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art, or another literary work symbol: anything (object, animal, event, person, or place) that represents itself but also stands for something else on a figurative level image: a word or phrase that appeals to one or more of the senses and creates a picture figurative language: imaginative language not meant to be taken literally, such as similes and metaphors

6 Honestly Frida What did you learn about Frida Kahlo’s life, art, and cultural identity? What details are emphasized in each text to support your interpretations of this artist and how she depicts her cultural identity in her work?

7 Juxtaposition Definition: Two unlike ideas are placed side by side for the purpose of comparison. Why Writers Use It: By placing two words or ideas next to one another, we can highlight the differences between them. Juxtaposition can be used on a small scale (like between words or images) or on a large scale (like between two characters or story lines). The effect can be funny or dramatic, depending on how it is used. A huge lion cowering with fear at the sight of a tiny mouse is a silly image. A grandmother holding a newborn baby might be a very powerful image juxtaposing birth and old age. Examples of juxtaposition in rap lyrics: – “Yeah, I’m out that Brooklyn, now I’m down in Tribeca Right next to De Niro, but I’ll be hood forever” - Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind” – “Rough in the ghetto, but in jail he’s Jello” - Kool G. Rap, “Road to the Riches”

10 OPTIC: A strategy for analyzing visual texts. Title of Piece: Artist: Type of Artwork: Overview: Look at the artwork for at least 10 seconds. Generate questions; e.g. What is the subject? What strikes you as interesting, odd, etc.? What is happening? Parts: Look closely at the artwork, making note of important elements and details. Ask additional questions, such as: Who are the figures? What is the setting and time period? What symbols are present? What historical information would aid understanding of this piece? Title: Consider what the title and any written elements of the text suggest about meaning. How does the title relate to what is portrayed? Inter-relationships: Look for connections between and among the title, caption, and the parts of the art. How are the different elements related? Conclusion: Form a conclusion about the meaning/theme of the text. Remember the questions you asked when you first examined the image. Be prepared to support your conclusions with evidence.

11 Painting—Discussion Questions How did the information about the artist’s life help you understand the artwork? What is the conflict presented in the artwork? Provide examples from the text to support your analysis. How does Frida Kahlo’s painting Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States represent her cultural identity?

12 Legal Alien Pat Mora is a poet, writer, and social activist whose works explore issues of heritage and social inequality. An avid traveler, Mora wrote Communion (1991) about her experiences traveling in Cuba, India, and Pakistan. A year later, she published her first children’s book about a beloved aunt who taught her to appreciate her own Mexican-American heritage. Based on the title of the poem, and the information about the author, what do you predict is the conflict in the poem?

13 Legal Alien—Discussion Questions Identify places where Mora juxtaposes two contrasting views, situations, or actions. How does she use this technique throughout the poem to create a sense of the speaker’s conflict with others—or her conflicted sense of self? How does Pat Mora represent cultural identity in this poem?

14 Answer as a Group What is emphasized in the art? What is emphasized in the poem? What ideas and images are present in the poem but absent from the art? What ideas and images are present in the art but absent from the poem? Choose a common subject from the Kahlo’s painting and Mora’s poem. Compare and contrast the ideas presented on that subject (e.g., cultural identity) in the artwork and the poem. What is similar and what is different? How does each person—artist and author—treat the subject?

15 Homework Artistic Prompt: What would a self-portrait say about your perspective on your cultural identity? Create an artistic work that portrays aspects of this identity. Consider techniques and specific images you can use as evidence to depict and/or symbolize potential conflicts that arise when various aspects of your culture collide. Because artwork, like literature, speaks to an audience, keep in mind the message you want your audience to “read” as they view your work. Creative Writing Prompt: Write a poem emulating the style of Pat Mora and exploring your perspective on a key component of your cultural identity. Be sure to: Focus on a specific culturally based conflict, which may be internal, external, or both. Structure the poem to use juxtaposition for effect at least once. Use diction, syntax, and imagery to present your own voice.
