Chlamydia Sum - most common bacterial STD with estimated 2.86 million new cases annually in the United States Sort - Bacterial Spread - through exchange of infected fluids during anal, oral and vaginal sex; mother to newborn during vaginal childbirth Symptoms - majority of those infected exhibit no symptoms; may exhibit discharge, burning during urination, pain, bleeding, fever. Untreated infection can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

Gonorrhea Sum - Estimated more than 820,000 new cases per year in the United States Sort - Bacterial Spread - through contact with anus, mouth, penis, or vagina; mother to newborn during vaginal childbirth Symptoms - majority of those infected display no symptoms; may exhibit white, yellow or green discharge, burning during urination, pain, vaginal bleeding. Untreated infection can lead to PID.

Syphilis Sum - over 55,400 new cases estimated per year in the United States Sort - Bacterial Spread - through direct contact with a syphilis sore during anal, oral or vaginal sex; mother to newborn during pregnancy or vaginal childbirth Symptoms - primary stage: painless sore which resolves; secondary stage: rash on hands and feet, fever, malaise; latent stage: damage to internal organs, nervous system, blindness, paralysis, death

Trichomoniasis Sum - most common curable STD; an estimated 3.7 million people currently have trichomoniasis in the United States Sort - Protozoal Spread - vaginal intercourse or genital-to-genital contact Symptoms - many of those infected exhibit no symptoms; may exhibit itchiness, strong smelling discharge, and/or discomfort during urination

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Sum - one in six people in the United States 14 to 49 years of age have genital HSV-2 infection, HSV-1 can also cause genital infection Sort - Viral Spread - transmitted from sores and between outbreaks from infected skin even if it appears normal; transmission between mother to baby is rare, but can be fatal for newborn Symptoms - the majority of those infected do not realize it; symptoms may include painful outbreaks consisting of blisters, fever and swollen glands

HIV Sum - CDC estimates 1.1 million persons are living with HIV infection in the United States. In 2011, an estimated 49,273 people were diagnosed with HIV infection in the United States Sort - Viral Spread - sexual activity during anal, oral or vaginal sex; infected needles; mother to baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding Symptoms - unreliable; need to be tested to know; 1 in 5 persons infected with HIV are unaware of infection

HPV Human Papilloma Virus Sum - approx. 79 million currently infected in the United States; 14 million newly infected per year Sort - Viral Spread - anal, oral or vaginal sex and genital-to- genital contact Symptoms - none in most people; a small percentage develop genital warts; others may develop HPV related cancers (cervical, vaginal, penile, anal, vulvar, head and neck). HPV-related cancers may not display symptoms until the cancer is advanced.
