Elements of good photography 1. Composition 2. Design 3. Light 4. Camera technique 5. Personal style
3
Composition and design A photo is an image placed inside a frame. Good photography is deciding what to place inside that frame and how to arrange it. 1. Rule of thirds 2. Balance 3. Angles 4. Lines 5. Shapes 6. Textures
4
Balane (symmetry) 1. Two equal parts 2. Creates a sense of balance with elements 3. Sense of equal weight
5
Unbalanced (asymmetrical) composition 1. Background distractions unwanted 2. Two haves are not equal
6
The rule of thirds The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts
7
Rule of thirds use In learning how to use the rule of thirds, the most important questions to be asking of yourself are: 1. What are the points of interest in this shot? 2. Where am I intentionally placing them?
8
Lines an element of photography A line is long relative to its width. It can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume
9
Shape as an element of photography Geometric shapes – circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and so on – have the clear edges one achieves when using tools to create such shapes. Organic shapes have natural, less well defined edges (think: an amoeba, or a cloud)
10
texture Another element of art, is used to describe either the way a three- dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual fel of a two- dimensional work
11
perspective Refers to the point from the subject is viewed Establishes emphasis “birds eye, worm view, up close, far away”
