History The history of the Bahamas can be traced back to Christopher Columbus's first voyage in 1492. The first attempt at a permanent western settlement, in the Bahamas, occurred in 1647. The 18th century African Slave Trade brought many Africans to the Bahamas. The Bahamas gained independence from the United Kingdom on July 10th 1973.

Information The Approximately 250,000 people. The Bahamian dollar is the national currency. The Bahamas is a sub- tropical climate, about 340 sunny days per year.

Facts on the Bahamas The official language is English. The main island is New Providence where the capital Nassau is located. Out-islands are called family islands because everybody knows everybody.
