The path to efficacy Pearson’s approach to improving learner outcomes [Presenter’s name, 00.00.2013]
2
The path to efficacy A new focus for everything we do As the world’s leading learning company, we feel we have a responsibility and an opportunity to help people make progress in their lives through learning We have aligned company activities around the principle of efficacy to achieve this Starting autumn 2013 we will be communicating about this publicly Driving learner outcomes1
3
What do we mean by efficacy? Driving learner outcomes2 A measurable impact on improving someone’s life through learning
4
The moment is now to make a lasting impact on learner lives More than ever before, there is a shared understanding that high quality education drives personal, economic and societal growth Governments, individuals, employers and institutions recognise the need to deliver high quality learning New technology makes it increasingly possible to see what works and what doesn’t in education to drive our ability to help learners achieve their goals Driving learner outcomes3
5
What is Pearson doing?
6
1. Measuring & improving Driving learner outcomes5 We are reviewing all of our products and services to ensure they deliver on learner outcomes We introduced a framework that is systematically being applied across the company to help us do this For some products it will take time to demonstrate efficacy but we will work hard to ensure that they are set on a path to efficacy
7
Our efficacy framework aims to measure likelihood of impact Driving learner outcomes6 What outcomes are we trying to achieve? What evidence do we have to believe it is possible to achieve these outcomes? What plans are in place to implement these outcomes? What capacity is in place to deliver on outcomes?
8
2. Embedding and leading We adapted core business processes driving the company to focus on delivering learner outcomes We will measure our success not only by financial returns but also by learner outcomes We hope to demonstrate the knowledge gained from this approach and encourage others to adopt it Driving learner outcomes7
9
3. Collaborating and exchanging We cannot do this alone - we are just one part of the education system We want to work with you, our partners, and other leading educators and organisations to co-create solutions We will share our approach with everyone, invite feedback on it and work together to tackle the great unmet education needs worldwide Driving learner outcomes8
10
Our commitment We will review all our acquisitions, investments and existing products and services to ensure they improve learner outcomes We will build and share a global bank of evidence on best practices in education at http://research.pearson.com We will publicly report our impact on learning outcomes, and set targets for improvement, across our business by 2018 9Driving learner outcomes
11
What does this mean for me?
12
Collaborate with us to define what learner outcomes we should achieve in education Give us your input about our products and services as we align them to help learners achieve their goals Use the efficacy framework (released Autumn 2013), tell us what works, what doesn’t and show us how we can improve the approach we are taking Ability to partner and continually dialogue with us 11Driving learner outcomes
