Course Syllabus and Outline

The Study of Child Development Development: “A pattern of movement or change that begins at conception and continues through the human life span” (Santrock, 2007, p.6) Children: Prenatal period until young adulthood (under 20)

The Study of Child Development This course centers on 3 components of Child Development What we know about it. How we know what we know (research). What we do with what we know/or what we do differently because of what we know (Application)

Why is the study of children relevant and of interest to you? As teachers, responsibility for children will be a part of your everyday life. This is equally true if you are, or will be, a parent Gain insight into your own history; challenges and triumphs. Allow you to better understand children, and what is typical across childhood.

The better you understand children, the better you will be able to guide them. This is particularly important if you are working with a child who is not achieving, performing or thriving. Consider what happens when you call for directions to a party… Understand where to start.

Tonight we will preview some of the themes and issues that will be covered in the course. Video: Teen Homelessness – The Fifth Estate. (2004) Please read Chapters 1 and 2 for next week.
