3
Booker T. Washington Middle school requires each student in grades (6th – 8th) to complete 25 grade level appropriate reading books per year. By reading 25 books, students will read approximately 1,000,000 words. ~ Research indicates that reading a million word increases vocabulary development, reading comprehension, reading fortitude, and fluency. It also increases enthusiasm and promotes a pleasure for reading.

25 Book Campaign To encourage Washington students to participate in the 25 Book Campaign. Language Arts instructors and Librarian monitor reading progress using AR and teachers/students keep book-logs. After a student meets the campaign goal they may enter their names in a drawing for prizes. The drawing takes place once a month. ~ Incentives are given away each month thanks to the generosity of our Partners in Education. ~ The Library spotlights Reading Leaders each quarter. Names and pictures are posted on the 100 Thousand Word Reader, Sparkling Reader Leaders and the 100 Line-Up Boards
