Atomic Structure Notes Continued Bohr Model - model that shows where particles are located in atoms. Valence electrons – outermost energy level (ring) Carbon: 6 Protons How many valence electrons? 6 Neutrons 6 Electrons
3
Using your periodic table, Draw a lewis dot structure for each element. 1. Na 6. S 2. Ca 7. Br 3. Ga 8. Ar 4. Si 5 P
4
Bohr Model Practice: Use the information to make a Bohr model Carbon: 6 Protons 6 Neutrons 6 Electrons Valence Electrons___ Nitrogen: 7 Protons 7 Neutrons 7 Electrons Valence Electrons___ Oxygen: 8 Protons 8 Neutrons 8 Electrons Valence Electrons___

Atoms bond easily with other elements to make compounds. What makes an element reactive? – An incomplete valence electron level. – All atoms (except hydrogen) want to have 8 electrons in their very outermost energy level (This is called the Octet Rule.) – Atoms bond until this level is complete. Some elements are only found in nature bonded with other elements. What does it mean to be reactive? Lewis Dot Handout Discover which groups/families of elements are likely to bond. Why won’t the Noble/Inert gases bond?

Lewis Dot Structure How to simply show valence electrons.

Periodic Table Study Guide www.middleschoolscience.comwww.middleschoolscience.com 2008 How to Draw Lewis Structures
8
Lewis Structures 1)Find your element on the periodic table. 2)Determine the number of valence electrons. 3)This is how many electrons you will draw.
9
Lewis Structures Find out which group (column) your element is in. This will tell you the number of valence electrons your element has. You will only draw the valence electrons. www.chem4kids.com
10
Groups - Review Each column is called a “group” Each element in a group has the same number of electrons in their outer orbital, also known as “shells”. Except for He, it has 2 electrons The electrons in the outer shell are called “valence electrons” www.chem4kids.com
11
Lewis Structures 1) Write the element symbol. 2) Carbon is in the 4 th group, so it has 4 valence electrons. 3) Starting at the right, draw 4 electrons, or dots, counter- clockwise around the element symbol.
12
Lewis Structures 1) Check your work. 2) Using your periodic table, check that Carbon is in the 4 th group. 3) You should have 4 total electrons, or dots, drawn in for Carbon.
