Tatum argues that racism is not always the discrimination, but a system of privileges that acts as favour on certain groups. Talking about the race informs people’s racial identity and their comfort level towards other races that can reduce racial prejudices. Ogbu focuses on subordinate culture, referring to American minorities such as African American and other racist groups. African American students are at a disadvantage because their culture is oral culture that they learn by speaking and listening. Therefore, they would have to adjust to reading and writing culture in America. John Ogbu
