About Riace Warrior B  It was made in 430-420 BC by Alkamenes, an Ancient Greek sculptor  It was found in the sea near Riace, Italy in 1972  Both Riace warriors are currently on display in National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria  Nobody knows who the warrior is supposed to be, but it thought that it comes from Argos, Delphi or Olympia

Features of the Statue  It is made of bronze  It is 196.5cm tall  The eyes are made of calcite  The teeth are made of silver  The lips are made of copper  The statue once held a spear and a shield and wore a helmet on its head

The Style of the Statue  They don’t really belong to a peroid of Greek sculpture as they were made in a transitional period between the Archaic and Classical periods of sculpture  It is known as a contrapposto statue as its weight is on its back leg, making it more realistic than a Kouros from the Archaic period of sculpture

More Features  The turned head conveys movement  The asymmetrical arms and legs makes it seem like a real person  The muscles on the sculpture are not idealistic and look more real than on statues from the Archaic period

Expert Opinion  In An Introduction to Greek Art, Susan Woodford calls the statue “dramatic and striking” due to the asymmetrical design, which makes it seem more lifelike than an Archaic Kouros.  She also says that the more natural pose make the statues “convey the impression of self-possessed human beings”.
