Regions A region is areas which share common features; like religion, language, geography and history. GA is part of four cultural regions, the South, the Deep South, the Southeast and the Sun Belt.

The South ► All states south of the Mason Dixon Line ► States that allowed slavery until the Civil War ► These states broke away and were their own country for 5 years during the Civil War. The Confederate States of America. ► Includes VA, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, MO, TX, OK Historical Connections

The Deep South ► Economic connection, historically farmers and historically rural. ► Heart of the Confederacy during the Civil War. ► Creators of cultural characteristics that are considered Southern. Food: cornbread collard greens Language: Southern dialect Includes SC, GA, MS, AL, LA and sometimes TX Cultural Connection

The Southeast ► Based on relative location ► Not a set group of states… always includes: GA, NC, SC and FL. sometimes includes: AL, MS, TN Location Connection

The Sun Belt ► These states are those that have had economic boom since the 1970’s. ► Their warm weather and lower cost of living attracted Northerners. ► States do not touch. Includes GA, FL, SC, TX, AZ and CA Economic Connection
