6 8 th Pouch (26.24-25) Dante compares the fireflies to the flickering flames he noticed first as he gets to the 8 th pouch

7 Flames In the 8 th pouch (26.40) There are many flames found here Each flame contained a sinner punished of falsely advising wickedness Odysseus and Diomedes are found in the pouch

11 Odysseus Reasons (26.95-140) 1. He advised the Greeks to build the Horse 2. This caused the destruction of Troy but the birthing of Rome by Aeneas 3. After he made it home, Odysseus left his father, son and beloved wife to explore the world 4. As he explored, he went where no man had been before 5. He had reached the mountain of Purgatory 6. There he was ship-wrecked and died

13 Summary As Dante and Virgil began to leave the 7 th pouch, he noticed that Florence’s earthly reputation was the same in hell. Once they got to the 8 th pouch, Dante noticed flames like fireflies flickering the whole pouch. As he paid close attention, he realized that each flame had a sinner in it. One in specific was Odysseus and Diomedes. Odysseus explains to Virgil his reasons for being there. He did not speak to Dante because Virgil had advised Dante not to speak since Greeks did not have respect for those who did not speak their language.
