Differences and Expectations of Year 1. Our focus this Autumn Term is underpinning our expectations. Can feel a more structured routine Sitting at their assigned tables. Independent work, which is curriculum based. Using books. Snack time differences. Visits – Library and Forest.

Cursive writing Expectations Cursive style Careful presentation. Letter formation. Letter size.

English This term the writing focus is on: Full stops Sentence structure Capital letters Spaces between words. Vocabulary- adjectives. The New Curriculum now has an emphasis on speech before writing; focus will include: Use of drama Story retelling. Structure explanation. These are essential tools put in place to aid writing.

Reading Phonics All children previously introduced to phase 3 and 4. This term introducing phase 5. Children should be encouraged to decode and blend as sounds are introduced. Key Stage One reading focus Comprehension and understanding of text In Year 1, we read with children 3 times a week. 1 of which is a guided read within school. You will see 2 entries in the reading diaries a week but the child’s book may not change both times.

Reading Parental Involvement Working as a partnership helps your child’s progress. Encourage fluency. Ask your child to retell the story. Question your child about favourite characters/plot etc. Please sign, date, indicate page read to and write a short comment in the home section of the reading diary. Keyword Books Keywords continue until Stage 5 Encourage to use and practise at home- don’t always test in the same order! Not every child has a book, depending on individuals stage. Next stage of reading book may not be issued if previous stage keywords are not known.

Homework Literacy and Numeracy will go out on alternate weeks, on a Friday evening to be returned by the following Wednesday. Homework packs. Start after half term- allowing Year 1 children a little more time to settle into their routines. Reading Books- a few pages every night. Please ensure reading book and diary are in school every day. Spellings will be sent home during week ending Friday 17 th October and tested the following Thursday or Friday. Tests will then continue every week throughout Year 1. Focus on phonemes taught and high frequency words.

Maths This term the focus is on: Calculation Numbers facts Length and 2D shape Fluency, reasoning and solving problems. The New Curriculum emphasises the written word as well as the digit. Supporting Maths at Marston Green Academy Maths pack- resources to help children. Maths diary- kept in the book bag, only for Year 1 children. Science Now a Core Subject in The New Curriculum Incorporated in our overview sheets handed out. Focus this term on Plants and Changing Seasons.

Forest School Starting Thursday 18 th September. Class 4/5/6. Uniform for the morning. Sensible clothes for afternoon- weather dependant. Please send girls with trousers- no skirts and remember socks if they have worn tights in the morning. Consent forms must be back by Monday 15 th September. Without consent children will be unable to participate.
