Reflection makes you even better! How do you know that everything you are doing in your classroom is really working? What can you improve on? Who can help you to improve? What can your students do to improve?

THE GAP Each student will learn at high levels. ©Pinellas County Schools/2002 No Child Left Behind Resources are not shared equitably. Student has a rough home life. Tests do not paint a clear picture of student ability. Not enough time to learn everything. Student has a disability. There are many reasons for a gap in learning. We need to find a way to help all children get across.

Each student will learn at high levels. Where are you in building the bridge? BALDRIGE CRITERIA is the foundation that bridges the gap. As good as we are, we have to find a way to ensure that all children, regardless of who they are, how they learn, what they have… achieves at high levels!!! ©Pinellas County Schools/2002

What is the Classroom Learning System? CLS is an organized approach to teaching and learning that focuses on the relationship between expectations, goals and measurements, and the results of students’ achievement. Simply put…it is a more intentional way to make sure that all of the wonderful things you are already doing are working for each and every student!
10
Have you heard of Baldrige? The word, “Baldrige” has been used in education since the early 1990’s. It’s not so much a thing, as it is a person. Malcolm Baldrige came up with a list of criteria that would promise increased quality. As teachers, we strive to increase the quality of learning for all children, creating more productive, knowledgeable, and productive citizens. Many teachers already know that using Baldrige’s criteria in a more intentional way just makes sense…

Secretary of Commerce 1981 - 1987 Proponent of quality management Helped draft one of the early versions of the Criteria, defining a strategic plan to increase quality The Baldrige National Quality Program awards businesses for their commitment to the Criteria ©Pinellas County Schools/2002

Why CLS? Here is what teachers and administrators say… CLS… Raises student achievement Motivates students Reduces discipline problems Saves time Gets results Changes the role of the teacher
13
It’s all about intentionality!!! Research shows: -students that lack clear direction, -do not understand how their actions affect their performance, -cannot plan for the future, will be more likely to fail, may drop out of school, and will ultimately lack the self-regulation skills necessary to be successful in life… It looks good on paper…HOW DOES IT WORK? If we do not consistently define high expectations, teach students how their performance can alter their grade, or differentiate our approach for each student, how can we guarantee that they will be successful? If we, as educators, are not modeling the process, how will they learn it? It’s all about intentionality.
14
It’s all about intentionality!!! -CLS increases accountability. If the students choose the consequences, they choose to commit!!! -Sharing the subject and grade-level expectations gives students a reason for coming to school. No longer will they ask, “Why are we doing this?” -CLS takes out the, “whine factor.” Parents and students are clear about how they play a part in student success. It looks good on paper…HOW DOES IT WORK? -CLS helps you to gage where your students are in terms of content knowledge, perceptions about ability, the classroom environment, and the effectiveness of your teaching. -CLS helps to ask the hard questions: “Why aren’t they getting it? What can I do to help them understand? What do they really know about this topic? Do my parents know how to help? How can I find out? -CLS gives you the tools you need to tweak those processes that drive you nuts…”I lost my pencil. I don’t have my homework. I have to go to the bathroom.” -CLS gives your students the self- regulation skills they will need when they leave school.
15
Through the use of a series of tools and processes, the student learns how to intentionally plan for success. The teacher gives the student a voice and makes mid-course adjustments that increase achievement. Teaching becomes more intentional and effective. Using processes that work, frees up time in the classroom for more teacher interaction, more productive independent work, and a shift in the role of the teacher to more of a facilitator of learning.
