1 Mathematics Enrichment DAY 8

2 Let’s talk about each of the answer choices and find the one that makes sense. REMEMBER, we want the situation that will NOT be LINEAR. CHOICE A If the tree grows at a “constant” rate, is its height linear? CHOICE B If the boat’s speed is constant, could the distance traveled be linear? CHOICE C Does the price of gas go up and never down? Yes, It’s linear. We don’t want LINEAR. Yes, It’s linear. We don’t want LINEAR. It’s NOT linear. This is what we are looking for!

3 Let’s talk about each of the answer choices and find the one that makes sense. REMEMBER, we want the situation that will be LINEAR this time. CHOICE A The price of bottled water may go up, down, or stay the same over a long period of time. CHOICE B The position of a spoke on a wheel is cyclic, meaning it repeats. It’s not ALWAYS increasing or decreasing. CHOICE C Is the height of the ball LINEAR? Meaning, does it just keep going up? CHOICE D An ASCENDING submarine will have a constant rate of RISE so it’s depth can be LINEAR. NO, It’s NOT linear. This is NOT what we are looking for! NO, It’s NOT linear. The ball bounces up and down! NO, It’s NOT linear. This is NOT what we are looking for! The rise of the submarine CAN be LINEAR. This IS what we are looking for.

4 Step 1: Each wrist band is $3.00. } number of wrist bands Step 2: Multiply each answer choice by $3 to find out how much money would be raised by that amount of wristbands CHOICE A 667 X $3 = $2001 CHOICE D 334 X $3 = $1002 CHOICE C 439 X $3 = $1317 CHOICE B 598 X $3 = $1794 Which one of the answer choices would make enough money for the charity? He NEEDS at least $2000.
