2/22 Other data storage methods. Roll call. Video: magneto- optical drives Step-by-step lecture: Zip drives, magneto- optical drives.
2
Part 1: Zip drives & disks Zip drives are a hybrid between floppies and hard drives. Magnetic media Can hold 120 MB. Images courtesy of Cnet.com
3
1. The Zip media Mylar cookie holds 100 MB. Magnetic coating: S-VHS instead of floppy disk coating. –Harder to magnetize.
4
2. The Zip heads. 1/10th the size of floppy drive heads. Lightly touch the media. Enter through hole on edge of protective case.
5
3. The Zip formatting Many more tracks than floppies. (~15 times). Zone recording: all sectors are same size.
6
Part 2: Magneto-Optical drives A hybrid of CD-ROM and hard drives. Magnetically saved data, Optically- locked system.
7
1. Magneto-Optical Media Crystalline magnetic alloy.
8
2. Magneto-Optical Writing Laser heats up small section of alloy. Magnet is able to affect the alloy at the elevated temperature.
9
3. Magneto-Optical Reading Less powerful laser points, Magnetized particles reflect polarized light. Light sensor reads and interprets 0&1.
10
2/24: Disk compression, defrag, etc. Begin troubleshooting phase of class Have questions ready about hard drive, floppy drives issues and problems. Read pg. 94-101 (ch. 15: “How disk drives increase speed and storage”)
