2 Steel Business

3 Workers conditions… Poor immigrants were the people taking the jobs in the steel towns. Initially was called an Iron Plantation. Steel production was the beast of the industry and the toughest job of all and NO safety standards were in required. Carnegie employed these workers. He always pushed for lower costs …. And pushed the workers to the limits.  Intense long hours – 84 per week  Low wages – less than $ 10 a week  Conditions were intense in 2000 degree areas where the worker could be scared or maimed at any time… and at this time period there was not workers compensation. The mill ran day and night.

4 Carnegie Richest man in the world. This was a time when we had no income tax and very little government interference. The rich adopted the theory of Darwinism- it was natural – that they should hold the wealth. And some thought God ordained it. … it was your problem if you were inferior..

7 Taking care of the Children….. This was the children’s playground. Yes… Behind the slum row houses.

9 Carnegie Carnegie took over Homestead it was a Union Town. Most mills remained non- union. Carnegie at first go along with labor leaders. Eventually this got in the way of making profits. He hired Henry Frick an prior business competitor to take over and run the mill at Homestead.

10 Henry Clay Frick Carnegie fled to Europe He left Frick in charge. Things turned ugly at the mill When he stepped up Production. The workers walked off the Job to protest the wages.

11 Homestead Strike Frick turned this into an Armored camp and hired Pinkertons to keep order. They were a private police Force used in labor disputes At the time.
