Glyncoed Primary School Assessment for Learning Workshop Thursday 16 th April 2015 Mr Green

Aims for the session: Understand what Assessment for Learning is. Become familiar with some of the strategies used in Glyncoed Primary School. Increase awareness on how children are assessed and how progress in tracked.

What is Assessment for Learning (AfL)? Assessment for learning is a powerful way of raising pupils' achievement. It is based on the principle that pupils will improve most if they understand the aim of their learning, where they are in relation to this aim and how they can achieve the aim (or close the gap in their knowledge).

The basics At the start of every lesson we share the learning objective for the session as the WALT. (e.g. WALT: add 2 digit numbers using partitioning) This is followed by sharing the SUCCESS CRITERIA. These are the things the children need to do in order to meet the WALT. (e.g. Split the 2 digit number into tens and units)

Activity 1 – Lolli Stick Lotto Can everyone write their name on a lollipop stick and I will collect them in? I will now select a lolli stick and if your name is called can you say something about yourself? Uses of the lollipop stick.

Activity 2 – Peer / Self Assessment Using the paper and pencil on your table can you draw this tiger butterfly? (8 mins)

Activity 2 continued... Swap your drawing with someone sat on your table. You need to discuss with that person how they can improve their drawing and listen to how they think you can improve yours. Using the tracing paper, lay it over the top of the original and make the improvements. Have you improved the drawing?

Activity 3 – Two Stars and a Wish Using your own tiger butterfly drawing you need to identify: Two things you have done well. One thing you need to improve. What is this used for?

Thumb tool

Fist of five!

Traffic lights

True OR False? Two of these statements are true, one is false... 1.Assessment for Learning strategies are used for children to be more aware of their own progress. 2.All the strategies I have shown you today are used in every lesson. 3.These strategies allow the teacher to have instant feedback on a child’s understanding.
