Lewis Structure A representation of a molecule that shows how the valence electrons are arranged among the atoms in the molecule based on the idea that the requirement for a stable compound is achieving the noble gas electron configuration

Types of Electrons Bonding pairs - electrons that are shared between two atoms Lone pairs - electrons that are not involved in bonding

Steps for Lewis Structures 1. Obtain the sum of valence electrons for all of the atoms 2. Use one pair of electrons to form a bond between each pair of atoms. 3. Rearrange the remaining electrons to follow the octet rule.
