2 The States Involved  1819 Union consisted of 11 free and 11 slave states  A compromise was needed to keep the balance of free and slave states  Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri a slave state  Missouri Comp. Line found on the 36 30 N

4 The Compromises  Illinois senator proposed amendment prohibiting slavery in the Louisiana Purchase territory north of Missouri’s southern border  Allowed slavery to expand into Arkansas territory south of Missouri

5  Henry Clay – Kentucky Congressman who managed the vote of Missouri Compromise  By pairing admittance of free and slave states the hope was to quiet dispute over expansion of slavery

6 Presidential Elections of 1824 & 1828  1824 Election had 4 candidates  All “favorite sons”, men who enjoyed support of leaders from own state, region  The candidates were:  Henry Clay of Kentucky  Andrew Jackson of Tennessee (“Old Hickory”)  John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts  William Crawford of Georgia – ran on states’ rights

11 Elections (cont)  Clay favored nat’l bank, protective tariff, nationwide internal improvements – known as American System  Jackson campaigned only on leadership, heroism at Battle of New Orleans

13 Elections (cont)  On election day, Jackson wins popular vote  No candidate won majority in Electoral College  Clay finished fourth and eliminated  Clay was Speaker of House  House of Reps. chose president

14  Clay supported J.Q. Adams (becomes president)  Jackson’s supporters accused Adams and Clay of striking “corrupt bargain”  Jackson’s supporters began calling selves Democrats  Clay’s supporters = National Republicans

15  Election of 1828  Adams and Jackson against each other  Both start “mudslinging”, criticizing each other’s personalities and morals  Jackson wins popular and electoral vote  Jackson becomes president
