Ireland’s geography Irelands’ area is 27,135 square miles. Some say that Ireland is like a badly baked pie, with mountains on the outside and lakes plains and bogs on the inside. The longest river in Ireland is the Shannon River. Ireland is right off the western coast of England and is part of Europe.

People of Ireland The Official language of Ireland is English, and Irish Gaelic. About 87% of Ireland is Roman Catholic. The life expectancy for men is 76 and 81 for women. The literacy rate for men and women is 99%.

Irelands’ Government Ireland is a republic with a parliamentary system of Government. It could also be called a democracy. The current president of Ireland is Mary McAleese.

Irelands’ Economy Irelands’ biggest industry is farming. The GDP in this country is about $282 Billion US dollars at current prices – 2008
