5. Students can earn an Associate’s Degree or transfer to a 4 year college Cost less than a 4 year college. Offer vocational degrees & technical degrees Students can earn their general ed. credits (60) then transfer to a 4 year college. Admit all students but placement tests determine level of coursework. A 4 year college is a place where students can earn a Bachelor of Art or Science degree. 4 year colleges cost more than a 2 year colleges. No need to transfer Colleges range from less to more to very selective. Require certain courses, grades & GPA to be admitted Many professional degrees offered. Fall semester: Explore campuses NOW; you will not apply until this winter/ spring http://CCCApply.org (all CCC’s in one place with college search, & application site) OR www.cccc.edu (college search) & www.cerrocoso.edu (Cerro Coso/Eastern Sierra College Center) Please be patient this fall while we work with the seniors who need to meet 4-year college deadlines!

Cerro Coso Time-line November – CCC/ Cerro Coso Workshop @ MHS for interested seniors February – Apply during Econ/Gov’t class March – Take English/ math placement test (Accuplacer) @ MHS for Cerro Coso April – Meet with Cerro Coso counselor Greg Kost in small groups to review career interests, scores, & classes you are eligible to register for Late April/early May – attend Cerro Coso Open House and register for classes

California Community Colleges Applications open at various times – keep checking @ http://CCCApply.org CCC use different placement tests – find out if others use the Accuplacer (if not you will have to travel to that college) March/April/May –complete orientation (may be on-line), take placement tests, meet with/ speak to a counselor, then register for classes. These steps are called “matriculation”

The A-G / College Entrance Requirements are a set of high school courses that students must complete (with a grade of C or better) to be minimally eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU). Seniors Applying to the CSU and UC You must be “A-G” eligible (see transcript) Explore campus choices at www.csumentor.edu & www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions Also use your College Board account or go to www.collegesearch.collegeboard.org DEADLINE TO APPLY IS NOVEMBER 30! There will be a required workshop in early October with Mrs. Jayne & Mrs. Petersen

CSU & UC For CSU applicants: If you need to take the English (EPT) or math (ELM) placement tests, they will be offered @ BHS in early December CSU: No essay required UC : “Personal Statement” is required (Mr. Cooper will work you) CSU & UC advice - “Apply broadly,” meaning apply to some less selective campuses as well as more selective campuses

Private 4-Year Colleges Check for application deadlines; they vary from one college to another Many colleges use one central application: @ www.Commonapp.org You will need recommendation letters, & the Secondary School Report Form which must be completed by a counselor (requires letter) Give teachers/counselors plenty of advance notice to write recommendations !!!!!!!

16. All Colleges & Universities Will require OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS at different times. These requests will be made to Mrs. Mclean. Community colleges – usually year-end only CSU and UC –year-end only, unless requested earlier Privates – when you apply, again @ mid-year (w/your 1 st sem. Grades), & at year-end All 4-year colleges –All offers of admission are conditional until courses & grades are confirmed for the senior year !!!!!

17. Grants - $$ given to students, usually based on financial need. (Cal Grants) Scholarships – $$ awarded based on achievement, outstanding talent/skill (merit), and/or need. Work-Study - $$ earned by students by working. Loans – $$ borrowed by students or parents, that has to be paid back. JANUARY – Attend Financial Aid Workshop for Seniors; complete your FAFSA on-line by March 2 nd, 2013 !!! Scholarship & financial aid info. will be handed out by your counselors in Jan.; the COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP apps will be handed out in April. Paying for College

18. The NCAA Eligibility Center verifies the academic & amateur status of all student-athletes who wish to compete in Division I or Division II athletics at 4-year colleges. Verify your eligibility for Div. I or Div II with Mrs. Petersen or Mrs. Jayne : 16 core courses + GPA + SAT or ACT score You will need to register with the NCAA’S Eligibility Center. This allows the NCAA to verify your eligibility as an athlete to practice & compete during your freshman year at NCAA Division I & II colleges. Divison III students (at community colleges) also should register. Register at: www.eligibilitycenter.org An official transcript must be provided by the Counseling Center NCAA - Playing Sports in College
