What is a run-on sentence? A sentence when two or more independent clauses are ran together without correct punctuation.

Methods to correct a run-on sentence 1.Write the two independent clauses as separate sentences using periods. 2.Use a semicolon to separate the two independent clauses. 3.Use a comma and any one of the following connecting words: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. 4.Use a semicolon and one of the following words: therefore, thus, however, consequently, furthermore, also, nevertheless

REMEMBER! When using semicolons, the two independent clauses must share a related or common idea.

Method 1 Write the two independent clauses as separate sentences using periods. CORRECT THIS: George loves to eat ice-cream his favorite is Rocky Road.

CORRECTED: George loves to eat ice-cream. His favorite is Rocky Road. A period was placed between ‘ice-cream’ and ‘his’ to separate the two independent clauses.

Method 2 Combine the two independent clauses by separating them with a semicolon (;). CORRECT THIS: Bob loves to smell flowers the smell of a rose is his favorite.

CORRECTED: Bob loves to smell flowers; the smell of a rose is his favorite. A semicolon was inserted between ‘flowers’ and ‘the’ to connect the independent clauses as one.

Method 3 Separate the independent clauses with a comma and a connecting word (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). CORRECT THIS: Cindy loves to eat candy she doesn’t want to gain weight.

CORRECTED: Cindy loves to eat candy, but she doesn’t want to gain weight. A comma-conjunction was put between ‘candy’ and ‘she’ to combine the two independent clauses.

Method 4 Separate the independent clauses by using a semicolon and a connecting word (therefore, thus, however, consequently, furthermore, also, nevertheless). CORRECT THIS: Fred loves to watch SpongeBob iCarly is his favorite show.

CORRECTED: Fred loves to watch SpongeBob; however iCarly is his favorite show. A comma-conjunction was placed between ‘SpongeBob’ and ‘iCarly’ to combine them together.

Run-on sentences are a very common mistake in writing, but with these helpful tips, you’ll be sure to have improvement!
