Today, forty out of every one hundred first marriages end in divorce, compared to sixteen out of every one hundred first marriages in 1960.
The number of cohabiting couples increased from 439,000 in 1960 to 4.24 million in – an almost tenfold increase.
Couples who cohabitate before marriage are almost twice as likely to divorce as those who do not.
Children whose parents are divorced are more likely to exhibit conduct problems, psychological maladjustment, and lower academic achievement.
They are more likely to drop out of school, engage in premarital sex, and become pregnant outside of marriage, compared to the intact family.
