Managed Desktop Service Status Report 25 th November 2004 Dave Underhill IT/UDS
3
General Guidelines Variety of PC packages to cover needs Cost based on Stores price + 20% –Spread over 4 years for PCs, 3 for laptops –Minimum rental of 6 months for PCs and 12 for laptops ONLY Windows supported (*) Replace failing hardware within 4 hours (*) not true, one can install it just like any other PC at CERN: Win, Linux or both
4
Evolution Slow to take off –Intended pilot project of 200 systems through DTF feedback never materialised –Lack of laptops in store initially –Suffered from a general lack of enthusiasm Steady progress –Now running 10-15 packages per month Represents 10% of PC sales Modified packages –Introduced the Engineering PC –Introduced the 17” monitor Improved publicity –Web site accessible from Stores catalog –Web page interfaces to Remedy Remedy –Handles both requests and problem reports
5
Packages by Department
6
Department Perspective Stable annual computing budget –300/400 CHF per FTE per year –310 CHF for a 6 month student –No unforeseen increases (W2K) –No capital investment risk –Low cost equipment for short term project Maintain Computing performance level No equipment administrative overhead User Perspective Minimal loss time in case of failure WEB problem reporting interface Upgrade does not cost the earth –15” monitor to 17” –Desktop to Engineering PC BUT – it’s not mine!!!
7
Conclusions Not a high visibility service –Suffered through lack of commitment –Co-existing with “regular” PC service; e.g. spare machines Cost is always an issue –Short term vs. long term Budget difficult to manage across years Concept is appealing –Centralized resource management –Less hassle for end users Future evolution ? –Co-existence/move to more managed desktops/stop

Mac Software Licensing P. Herzog, L. Pregernig, A. Silverman Desktop Forum 25 November 2004
9
Mac Software Licences STATUS File server clean-up License keys for trial versions are illegal for production use and not available on the server Reference configuration available (cernmac02/macdev) Some numbers Mac entries (LAN and wire-less) in CERN’s network database 2,200 hardware addresses with Apple as manufacturer Informal survey (June 2004): “straw poll, but good sample” Replies: 30 users, requesting 328 licenses for 80 applications 2/3 of the requested licenses are for 35 applications which are part of the reference configuration or “other” applications Pricing Typically, CERN qualifies for educational pricing
10
Mac Software Licences REFERENCE CONFIGURATION (physics users) MacOSX and applications on Apple hardware:
11
Mac Software Licences “OTHER APPLICATIONS”
12
Mac Software Licences PROPOSAL Purchase an initial set of concurrent licences 20 for AcrobatPro, Illustrator, Photoshop 10 for Dreamweaver, FileMaker Monitor the licence use and adjust accordingly Licence key server Block individual-licence purchases for products covered by the concurrent licences Introduce other applications if justified by demand
13
Mac Software Licences PROPOSAL (cont’d) If no central licence exists
14
Mac Software Licences BENEFITS Substantial cost savings 8x compared to individual purchases Little overhead Compliance with licence agreements
