2 Meeting Needs 1. Physical Needs –Rest Naps, bedtime 2. Food –Nutritious food, avoid choking foods (peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs, etc)

3 3. Clothing –Daily change, frequent diaper changes 4. Bath Time –Frequent bathing, check temperature of water, never leave alone

4 5. Health Care –Good dental care, brushing teeth, doctor exams, vaccination Immunizations are: –Vaccines developed to prevent specific diseases, such as polio, diptheria, measles

5 6. Illness Requires soft foods, lots of liquids Dehydration –Too low on fluids

6 Intellectual Needs Important to play games and stimulate creativity Changing toys so they don’t become bored

7 Emotional Needs Listen attentively, praise child’s efforts, quickly comfort, accept child’s fears, give hugs

8 Social Needs Interacting with children and provide them opportunities to interact with other children Sharing Toys and taking turns

9 Moral Needs Develop sense of right and wrong, basic values like fairness, justice, and empathy **taught by example, better than preaching

10 Guiding Behavior Promote good behavior –Model appropriate behavior –Not hitting and yelling –Use please and thank you and excuse me

11 Setting Limits Limits protect children Review rules frequently –Clear and positive limits –Stated positively

12 Handling Misbehavior Consistency Corrective action should be immediate and fit the misbehavior Time out is… –Child is required to sit quietly for a period of time, usually about a minute for each year of age

13 Keep Children Safe Childproof… –Making the environment safe for children Reduce accidents

14 Preventing Accidents Give infants and toddlers sturdy playthings Prevent suffocation, take away bags Restrict crawling children Teach concept of hot Keep away from fans Secure infants and toddlers in car seats and seatbelts

15 Protect Children Give limits Teach children what a stranger is Leave children with trusted people Listen to children

16 Emergencies First aid… –Emergency care or treatment given away to an ill or injured person Heimlich Maneuver, the action taken to aid a person who is choking Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the action taken when a person’s heart or breathing has stopped (CPR)

17 Fire Get all children out Walk to safest exit If smoke filled, crawl out

18 Car Safey Children should not ride up front because of air bags Babies face the rear Babies never are held in your lap

19 Poisons Children should not vomit if they swallow acid, alkali, or petroleum product Drink milk and call the poison control center first

20 Activities Do’s & Don’t’s Have students write four set of instructions for children, each containing a positive and negative version of the same rule. Ex. Don’t go into the street Stay on the sidewalk

21 Activity continued Discuss “Do as I say, not as I do” “Actions speak louder than words” “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.

22 Have students create labels that caregivers could put on potentially dangerous products, such as cleaners –**children can’t read
