Jenkins on Participatory Culture and Civic Engagement 1 High school students had a better intellectual life outside of school than inside of school. Participatory culture means everyone participates. Meaning they produce media and share media. Youtube

Jenkins on Participatory Culture and Civic Engagement 1 School systems are locked down. Federal policy makes it difficult to change. Students are in schools where participatory culture is locked out. It’s important to figure out how to bring participatory culture into education.

The New Media Literacies The New Media Literacies are skills that everyone needs to deal with our culture in today’s world. Technology. It’s important that we shift with the changes in the world.

Common Core State Standards 1.Research and evidence based. 2.Clear, understandable, and consistent. 3.Aligned with college and career expectations 4.Based on rigorous content and the application of knowledge through higher order thinking skills 5.Built upon the strengths and lessons of current state standards. 6.Informed by other top performing countries to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society.

Social Networking as a Tool for Student and Teacher Learning Social networking sites allow people to connect with each other, collaborate with each other, and form virtual communities. Social networking allows people to post comments, send-emails, build web content, or take part in live chats. National School Boards Association Study found that 96 percent of people use social networking. Half of them use it for school.

Social Networking as a Tool for Student and Teacher Learning Why not incorporate social networking into schools? District and school administrators have concerns: How can we protect students? What are the educational benefits? What policy issues need to be considered? Example: Teachers should not accept students as friends on personal social networking sites, but it allows teachers to incorporate technology into their classrooms as long as they present their plans to school administrators, fellow teachers, and parents.

Social Networking as a Tool for Student and Teacher Learning Benefits: 1.Determine which social networking sites students like to use. 2.Inform students of the learning opportunities on social networking sites. 3.Show students how to set up their own blogs. 4.Can meet the needs of students.

Social Networking as a Tool for Student and Teacher Learning 5.Challenge students to express themselves. 6.Students can receive help with their schoolwork from their classmates. 7.Can build students communication and technology skills. 8.Can help students understand different points of view.

Questions In what ways, do you think the traditional education system is beneficial and in what ways do you think it’s not beneficial? If you could change one part of the education system, what would you change and how would you change it to benefit students learning and their success in schools?
