WaG #6 – Simple Sentence What makes a sentence “simple?”

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the simple sentences. What writing/grammar rules or definitions can you identify? Simple Sentence 1a – This book is unusually interesting. 1b – My brother and sister will arrive tomorrow. 1c – He opened the package and found a new camera.

Simple Sentence simple sentence single independent clause must have a subject and a verb may have a compound subject and/or a compound verb

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about short vs. simple sentences. What writing/grammar rules or definitions can you identify? Short vs. Simple 2a – We ordered a pizza. 2b – We ordered a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese. 2c – Ellen won first prize. 2d – Ellen’s story, a spooky thriller, won first prize.

Short vs. Simple Short vs. Simple Improve short sentences by adding details to the subjects or verbs. Some choppy sentences can be combined into 1 longer simple sentence.

Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook. Ed opened the package and found a new camera. Monique described the characters and the setting realistically. I really enjoyed the dramatic ending.

Now add 2 more simple sentences on any topic of your choice. Make sure to keep them simple, but not too short that they lack details.
