DataGrid WP7 Network Monitoring Robin Tasker, Daresbury Laboratory, 8 March 2001 Network Monitoring Requirements document produced, http://icfamon.dl.ac.uk/papers/WP7/netmon-requirements.html deals with, 1. Purpose (and timescale) of monitoring - immediate “health” of the network - daily/weekly/monthly state of network 2. Network Monitoring metrics 3. Network monitoring software and hardware 4. Plan of campaign Remember that this is all work-in-progress
2
Network Monitoring Metrics: Identified and Discussed 1. Packet loss 2. Round Trip Time, i.e. there and back 3. One-way delay 4. RTT / One-way delay relative to specific route 5. RTT variation (frequency distribution) 6. Jitter 7. Volume (number of Grid bytes exchanged) 8. Per flow application throughput 9. Aggregate network throughput
3
Network Monitoring: Methods Available - Basic tools traceroute, ping, traceping, pchar, MRTG, netperf, etc.. - RIPE NCC Traffic Test Monitoring box (also Surveyor) one-way delay, packet loss, jitter, route information - PingER Software round trip time and frequency, packet loss traceroute facility (includes NIKHEF traceroute) - iperf and Throughput measurement tools - the applications themselves can keep statistics of activities
4
Plan of Campaign - What’s being Proposed Six “pre-testbed” sites identified to trial monitoring methods and the display of data. Aim to be up and running by end March - Deployment of RIPE NCC TTM boxes at each site, being co-ordinated by NIKHEF. Access to data via the Web to show output for the matrix of sites - Deployment of PingER software at each site and Web-based means of analysing and displaying data - Develop Web pages to provide access to this monitoring output i.e see http://ppncg.rl.ac.uk/ppncg/datagrid.html but remember it’s being updated to reflect the work that WP7 is doing - Encourage trial of other monitoring techniques between sites
5
What’s next? - Review network monitoring “products” against requirements; are there better ways of doing this monitoring? - Take advice from other WP's and their requirements - Modify existing monitoring as appropriate and roll out across the emerging testbed sites - Consider how to make these “products” available to the middleware to provide feedback to the applications etc. This requires good input from the other WP’s
