IYA09 - Denmark Kristian Pedersen IDA, DARK, NBI, KU www.astrofysik.dk

The astro landscape in Denmark Research institutions (Universities in Cph, Århus, Technical University, Danish Space Center => Astronomisk Udvalg) ’Public University’, Folkeuniversitetet High schools, ’Gymnasiums’ Primary schools Centres for educating primary school teachers, ’Seminarier’ Planetariums (Cph., Århus, Jels,...) Science Centres (Experimentarium, Danfoss Universe,...) Museums (Steno, Kroppedal, Technical Museum, National Museum,...) Amateur astro societies & clubs (Astronomisk Selskab, Astronomibladet, local clubs, ‘small’ observatories...)

Set up National committee lead by SPOC: - Coordinate (regular meetings, web site,...) - Initiate and run (some of the) larger, national activities (which otherwise wouldn’t have materialised) - Inspire and encourage local activities - Approve activities under IYA09 umbrella - Get funding - Announcing activities/events - Let the local initiatives flourish! (guided anarchy - not too much interference from national committee)

Philosophy Involve all levels in education system Involve all ages of the population Focus on interdisciplinarity: Astronomy, society, man,... Activate main players already out there (Science museums to amateurs to...) 4 main themes? Danish astro history: Tycho, Rømer, Strömgren,... What is Astronomy? Man (woman) and the Universe Current Danish Astronomy research (GRBs, asteroseismology,...) Do-it-yourself-Astronomy: Backyard observations, laptop activities,...

Approach Set up measureable goals, milestones, and time line Few high profile national events/activities involving sizeable fraction of population (>10%?) by national committee Lots of local/regional events/activities organized by locals, coordinated by national committee Evaluation, recommendations (along the way + after IYA09),

Specific ideas - national scale Solar System Cycle Tour Web based Solar System scaling activities (combined with city and country maps) School telescope building projects Experimentarium major exhibition in 2009 on the Universe National Museum exhibition on Rømer Tycho exhibition at University of Copenhagen
