3
Main Idea/Vocabulary Display and interpret data in a box-and-whisker plot. box-and-whisker plot
4
NGSSS MA.8.S.3.1 Select, organize and construct appropriate data displays, including box and whisker plots, scatter plots, and lines of best fit to convey information and make conjectures about possible relationships.
5
Example 1 Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot ENVIRONMENT Use the data in the table below to construct a box-and-whisker plot.
6
Example 1 Find the measures of variation and the least and greatest value in the data. The least value in the data is 39.1. The lower quartile is 63.9. The median is 74.1. The upper quartile is 81.8. The greatest value is 95.5. The interquartile range is 81.8 – 63.9 or 17.9. Multiply the interquartile range by 1.5. 17.9 × 1.5 = 26.85 Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
7
Example 1 Since there are no values 26.85 less than the lower quartile or 26.85 greater than the upper quartile, there are no outliers in the data. Draw the box-and-whisker plot. Step 1Draw a number line that includes the least and greatest numbers in the data. Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
8
Example 1 Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot Step 2Mark the extremes, the median, and the upper and lower quartile above the number line. Check for outliers. If an outlier exists, mark the greatest value that is not an outlier. Use an asterisk (*) to indicate an outlier. It is not connected to a whisker. Step 3Draw the box and the whiskers. minimum value lower quartile median upper quartile maximum value

Example 1 Answer: Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
10
Example 1 CYP ENTERTAINMENT Use the data below to construct a box-and-whisker plot. prices of movie tickets: $8.50, $7.00, $12.00, $9.50, $9.00, $8.00, $8.50, $7.00, $6.00, $4.00 A. B. C. D.
11
Example 2 WATERFALLS What does the length of the box-and-whisker plot tell you about the data? Interpret Data Answer: Data in the second quartile are slightly more spread out than the data in the third quartile. You can see that data in the fourth quartile are more spread out because the whisker is longer than the other parts of the plot.
12
Example 2 CYP A.Data in the first quartile are more spread out than the data in the second quartile. B.Data in second quartile are more spread out than the data in the first quartile. C.Data in third quartile are more spread out than the data in the first quartile. D.Data in fourth quartile are less spread out than the data in the third quartile. ENVIRONMENT What does the length of the box-and-whisker plot tell you about the data? Environmental Performance Index

15
A.set 1 B.set 2 Which set of data has the greater range? Set 1: 17, 23, 24, 27, 30, 31, 32, 38, 43, 45, 46 Set 2: 51, 59, 67, 70, 76, 44, 52, 63, 69, 73, 99 Five Minute Check 3
