The Sun-Earth-Moon System
A Project Based On Middle School Earth Science Standard 1.1 (CCSS-MS-ES-1.1)

Middle School Earth Science Standard 1. 1 (CCSS-MS-ES-1
Middle School Earth Science Standard 1.1 (CCSS-MS-ES-1.1) states that a 7th grader should be able to Develop and use a model of the Sun‐- Earth--Moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons. If you have not been successful in meeting this standard through in-class activities and quizzes, you MUST complete this project in order to achieve a PR rating. All students that fail to complete this project successfully will be left with their current rating for Earth Science. Due date: Thursday, January 7, ABSOLUTELY NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you think you will not have time over break, complete the project early and turn it in before you leave for winter vacation.

In Order To Be Successful, You Must:
Create a model that illustrates your understanding of three key Sun-Earth-Moon relationships: The Sun-Earth Relationship and how it causes seasons The Earth-Moon Relationship and why we see 8 moon phases The Sun-Earth-Moon Relationship including how they move in relation to one another (rotations and revolutions) and what happens during solar and lunar eclipses Each relationship must have at least 1 visual.
4
In Order To Be Successful, You Must:
Make all pictures, diagrams, and representations by hand. No images may be printed from the internet or clipped from books, magazines, or other print materials. You may use these resources as references but you MUST create the model yourself. Include captions that explain what is happening in each visual and how/why the phenomena works. These may be typed or neatly handwritten.
5
In Order To Be Successful, You Must:
Create a physical model. No electronic presentations (prezis, powerpoints, powtoons, glogsters, etc.) will be accepted. Include ALL necessary components as outlined in the project rubric. You may find it helpful to search ideas for model building on Pinterest

The Sun-Earth Relationship
AD PR BA MI The Sun-Earth Relationship Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that clearly shows when and why seasons change in the both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Captions include use of key vocabulary terms and gives full, accurate explanation of the uneven distribution of heat on the planet and its effects. Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that clearly shows when and why seasons change in the Northern Hemisphere. Captions include use of key vocabulary terms and give an accurate but not necessarily full explanation of the uneven distribution of heat on the planet and its effects. Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that attempts to show why seasons change in the Northern Hemisphere. Captions include minimal use of key vocabulary terms and give an inaccurate or incomplete explanation of the uneven distribution of heat on the planet and its effects. Student fails to include reasonable attempts at fulfilling these requirements. The Earth-Moon Relationship Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that clearly shows both how the moon is actually lit and the different phases of the moon as seen from Earth. Captions include use of key vocabulary terms and gives full, accurate explanation of the different phases and when and why we see them. Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that clearly shows the different phases of the moon as seen from Earth. Captions include use of key vocabulary terms and gives accurate though not necessarily full explanations of the different phases and when and why we see them. Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that attempts to show the different phases of the moon as seen from Earth. Captions include minimal use of key vocabulary terms and gives inaccurate or incomplete explanations of the different phases and when and why we see them. The Sun-Earth-Moon Relationship Model incudes diagram, drawings, or other student created visual that clearly shows what happens during both lunar and solar eclipses. Captions include use of key vocabulary terms and gives full, accurate explanation of how the two types of eclipses occur, when, and why.
