As a deer in want of water, so I long for you, O Lord. All my heart and being falter, thirst ing for your living word. When shall I behold your face ? When shall I receive your grace ? When shall I, your praises voicing, come be fore you with re joicing ? [Sing to the Lord 42]

2. Bit ter tears of lamen tation are my food by night and day. In my deep humili ation “ Where is now your God ?” they say. When my sor rows weigh on me, then I bring to memo ry how with throngs I would as semble, shout ing prais es in your temple.

3. O my soul, why are you grieving, why dis qui et ed in me ? Put your hope in God, be lieving he will still your refuge be. I a gain shall praise his grace for the com fort of his face ; he will show his help and favour for he is my God and Saviour.

4. From the land beyond the Jordan, in my grief I think of you ; from the foot hills of Mount Hermon I will still re member you. As the wa ters plunge and leap, storm y trou bles o’er me sweep. Day and night God’s song is with me as a prayer to him who loves me.

5. I will say to God, my fortress, “ Why have you for gotten me ? Why must I proceed in sadness, hound ed by the enemy ?” Their re bukes and scoffing words pierce my bones like pointed swords, as they say with proud de fiance, “ Where is God, your firm re liance ?”
