Grand Canyon Scientists do not know EXACTLY how the Grand Canyon was formed What they do know: Colorado River wore away the rock of the Grand Canyon Boulders, gravel, and sand helped carve out the canyon Rainwater helped dissolve certain rocks Wind played a part by blowing sand against the rock

People and the Canyon Anasazi Lived near the canyon hundreds of years ago Basket makers, potters, built irrigation systems for the farms Lived in homes made of adobe Pueblo People Live in villages of adobe homes similar to the Anasazi Havasupai Live in Havasu Canyon among beautiful waterfalls and pools

National Park John Wesley Powell In 1869 explored parts of the canyon Wrote about the canyon and led others to want to explore it First to call this landform the “GRAND CANYON” Teddy Roosevelt 1919 named a part of the Grand Canyon a National Park in order to protect its beauty

Climates Variety of Climates Deserts, Arid, Humid Oklahoma Humid and Windy Experiences thunderstorms, blizzards, and tornadoes Texas has a variety of climates because of its size Eastern - Hot and Humid Western - Hot and Dry

Popular Plants Saguaro Cactus Found in the Sonoran Desert Symbol of the Southwest Can store enough water to stay alive during very long dry periods Provides shelter for animals

Navajo Mainly hunters and gatherers Lived in homes called hogans Organized into clans or family groups Each clan had a leader

The Long Walk The 300 mile journey the Navajo made from Arizona to New Mexico US Government ordered them to leave their land to prevent conflicts between Navajo and white settlers Many Navajo died along the way

Ranches and Drivers Uses for cattle Meat, leather, buckles Tallow: Fat used to make candles and soap Philip Armour Started the first meat-packing industry in Chicago King Ranch used for scientific study of cattle and diseases
