English Settlement The basic motivation for English settlement was to make money! A rising middle class and mercantilism made for a quest for profits in the New World. Markets and resources were key.

Go to Hell! (Or The New World!) Religious conflict between Anglicans, Puritans, Catholics, and eventually Quakers led to many people seeking spiritual freedom (for themselves!)in America.

Man, This Place Stinks Crowding, lack of opportunities, and eviction due to criminal activities also drove English families to the New World. It seemed like a good place to dump the ‘scum’ and the poor.

Great Variation in Environments Colonies ranged from fertile places were cash crops flourished, to rocky, infertile and cold lands where survival was difficult. Settlers had to adjust to many different conditions.

Different Peoples Not only the English! *Dutch *French *Germans *Scots-Irish *Africans

Different Faiths Many different religions were practiced, from Anglicanism and Congregationalism to African ceremonies. The impact of religion varied according to the government and people of each colony.
