Colonial Governments Colonial Government: A colonial government is a government that is in charge of a colony. It makes the laws and rules for the people that live in that colony. * All colonies were ultimately controlled by the king. Each government in the colonies (colonial government) had to have a charter (written permission) from the king in order to be in power. Proprietary Colony: Many of the 13 colonies were proprietary colonies. That means that the king gave these lands to people. Because those people owned the land, they were called proprietors. In a proprietary colony, the proprietor (owner) gets to make the laws and/or say who is in charge.

Chapter 3.4 Life in the English Colonies
Main Ideas: Colonial governments were influenced by political changes in England. English trade laws limited free trade in the colonies. The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment led to ideas of political equality among many colonists. The French and Indian War gave England control of more land in North America. Big Idea: The English colonies continued to grow despite many challenges.

Colonial Governments IN some colonies, colonists got to choose people (elect/vote for) who made laws for them. These chosen officials would serve in assemblies that got to pass laws, but it had to be approved by the governor (chosen by the king or proprietor). This is some form of self-government. Virginia: House of Burgesses – elected by colonists. Self Government. New England: town meetings – people got to discuss and make decisions about local issues. A form of self expression and self-government. Middle colonies and Southern colonies also had county meetings and town meetings.
