How to Become an Automotive Service Technician or Mechanic Automotive service technicians and mechanics should complete a formal training program, or an apprenticeship. Industry certification is usually required once the person is employed. The education you need is usually a high school diploma. The training employees need in these occupations is anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees. Some previous work- related skill, knowledge, or experience is usually needed.

Work Environment Most automotive service technicians and mechanics work in well-ventilated and well-lit repair shops. Although mechanical problems can often be fixed with computers, technicians perform many tasks with greasy parts and tools, while sometimes in uncomfortable positions.

The normal pay is the pay at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 % earned less than $20,200, and the top 10 % earned more than $59,590.
