Separation of Powers

Powers of government are restricted (limited) by the Constitution. Ex. Bill of Rights “Rule of Law” No people or groups are above the law.

People are the source of the government’s power and they rule through their representatives. Ex. “We the People” Election Process (Voting)

People elect Representatives and give them the responsibility to make laws and conduct Government. Ex.President Senator

Each branch of government exercises some control over the other two branches. Ex. President can veto a law Congress can override a presidential veto with 2/3 votes of both houses President can appoint Supreme Court Justices, Senate must approve appointments

Power is divided between the national (federal) and state governments. National Government Declare War Coin Money State Government Establish Public School Systems Federal and State Governments Enforce Laws Collect Taxes Federal Government States National Sovereignty and States’ Rights

Basic liberties and rights of all citizens are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Ex. Freedom of Speech Freedom of Religion

Each of the three branches of government has its own responsibilities. Legislative Branch-makes the law Executive Branch- carries out the law Judicial Branch- interprets or applies the law
