1 Reproduction & Growth 5. Reproduction

2 People reproduce by making babies
Vocabulary: reproduce to make more of the species

3 You started life as one cell
This cell formed when sperm from your father fertilized an egg from your mother

4 Then you started to grow inside your mother
Your mother was pregnant, but how did you develop?

5 When a fertilized egg begins to grow in the female body
Vocabulary: pregnant When a fertilized egg begins to grow in the female body

6 Blood vessels from the uterus and the developing fetus grow to form a tissue called the placenta
Vocabulary: placenta A tissue between the fetus and uterus for nutrients and waste to pass through

7 A tube between the fetus and the placenta
As more of the cells of the fetus grow, some of the cells form a tube called the umbilical cord Vocabulary: umbilical cord A tube between the fetus and the placenta

8 When the mother eats, food is broken down into tiny particles
These particles flow through her blood to the placenta

9 That’s how the fetus gets food, oxygen, and water
Then the food particles move through the umbilical cord and into the fetus That’s how the fetus gets food, oxygen, and water

10 Waste from the fetus passes into the mother through the placenta also

11 When a female is pregnant, she must rest and eat good food
She should not smoke or drink alcohol because these things could hurt the fetus

12 After about 9 months the baby is ready to be born
The baby moves down through the birth canal and out the vagina

13 The place the umbilical cord was attached to the baby (belly button)
The doctor cuts the umbilical cord, which then becomes the baby’s navel Vocabulary: navel The place the umbilical cord was attached to the baby (belly button)

14 The baby now breathes and eats outside its mother’s body

15 People belong to the group of animals called mammals
Vocabulary: mammal A group of animals that have glands that make milk

16 Female mammals make the milk so the babies can use this milk for food
The mother’s milk changes as the needs of the baby change which amazes scientists

17 Some mothers choose to feed the baby formula which consists of cow’s milk and vegetable oils
Some mothers are unable to breastfeed or choose not to because of their lifestyle
