Thematic Maps: Thematic Map: A map that shows patterns often emphasizing one subject or theme. Thematic maps are useful because only one type of info needs to be shown.

Physical Maps Physical Map: A map that shows landforms and physical features of the earth. Physical Maps are important because they display the natural features of the earth. Examples: rivers, lakes, streams, mountains, plains, valleys, deserts, elevation.

Political Maps: Political Map: A map that shows boundaries, countries, states and infrastructure. A political map is important because it shows human-made things like borders, countries, capitals, cities, roads, railroad tracks and parks.

Key/Legend: A list that explains the symbols, colors, and lines used on a map.
