2 The Early Renaissance The Early Renaissance (Italy) 1400-1500 Started in Florence, Italy Wealthy families, & royal courts become patrons of art. Artists were inspired by the works of “classical” Greece & Rome. ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE RE-INVENTED Return to a more NATURAL looking art, away from the strict Byzantine Art..but bodies are elongated a bit. This is the first time that ARTIST are perceived as brilliant and talented, not simply craftspeople.

3 Masaccio Artists in early renaissance were known for rebirth in realistic clothing and humanistic features. Very few were as good as the young Masaccio. A remarkable example of one point perspective. (NEW CONCEPT IN THE RENN.) The viewer is set to look up to the " Holy Trinity " and below to the tomb. God is seen as Human, The holy spirit a White Dove both above Jesus the Son below. The skeleton ( may be Adam below) Masaccio bases this off of realism and Math to form symmetry in the composition. The patrons are seen in the image The Fresco creates a cool somber mood, dark colors and shadows help to set the tone. The Holy Trinity, c. 1427, Fresco, 667 x 317 cm

5 Sandro Botticelli- Sandro Botticelli- The Birth of Venus c. 1480 size 5’ 8” x 9’ 2” Venus the Goddess of Love shown being born- just been born from the foam of the sea is being gently blown to shore by Zephyr and Aura, god(s) of the winds, Approaching the earth over she becomes suddenly modest One of the Graces waits on shore to cover Venus with a cloak. This is EARLY RENNASCANCE-notice body proportions, classical theme, semi flat space Some historians believe this was understood to be symbolic of Christianity…her modesty= Mary, Zephr shown like an angel
