4 Exceeding Standard (4) At Standard (3) Approaching Standard (2) Below Standard (1) States a Claim W5.1a Clearly states a claim that challenges the reader’s opinion. States a claim that takes a position on the topic. States a claim that is related to the topic, but does not show a clear position or opinion. May introduce a main topic but does not state a clear position. Structures Informatio nW5.1a,b Paragraphs are logically ordered in a way that strengthens the claim by anticipating counter opinions. Paragraph(s) include a claim supported by evidence. Multiple claims and evidences are grouped into one paragraph. Includes ideas in no particular order that may or may not relate to the topic. 5 Note Taking/ Paraphrasing – Today I want to demonstrate how to take notes like a researcher. – We don’t just scribble scrabble an odd fact or two; we make sure our notes are careful and precise because they will be an important reference for later writing.

7 Penguins- 1 Adélie penguins breed and raise their young farther south than any other penguin, on the continent of Antarctica. In September and October—springtime in that part of the world—thousands of Adélies gather on the rocky Antarctic shoreline. The huge gatherings are called colonies. This is where the Adélies breed and raise their young.

8 Penguins- 2 Adelie Penguins travel farther south than any other penguin to have their babies because its springtime on that part of Antarctica. Thousands gather on the shoreline in colonies and raise their young.

9 Note Taking/ Paraphrasing Remember as you read and take notes, by paraphrasing you want to think about what you have read to make sure you comprehend the text before putting the information in your own words.
