2. We expect students coming into Second Grade to be able to do the following: -Recognize alphabet letters (names and sounds), “special” German characters (such as ß, Ä, ä, Ö, ö, Ü, ü) -Write upper and lower case letters -Read and write First Grade high-frequency words -Read a First Grade text fluently. -Know HOW to write on a piece of paper or in a book (left to right, don’t skip pages, don’t write across 2 pages, write between the lines)

7. Language Acquisition We use a variety of the following methods to help students acquire the target language: Stories, “fill in the blanks”, and a variety of worksheets used for themes and/or holidays studied. “Tobi Fibel” Reading Practice, Decoding “Grammatikschule” Grammar workbook “5-Minuten Diktate” Reading, Writing, Listening Practice “Grundwortschatz” Vocabulary, Spelling, Reading Reading Comprehension activities for fiction and non-fiction Center-based activities to practice all skills

8. Language Acquisition cont. We read stories and chapter books by selected in the target language! Picture walks—looking at and describing pictures before we actually read the text—are used. This allows students to become acquainted with the theme before focusing on the decoding and reading of new vocabulary. The more students have knowledge and command of the spoken language, the easier they can read and write the written language. Centers for word work and reading. Visuals (drawings, photos, internet websites, real objects, graphic organizers) are a necessity to help students relate the word with the object or idea itself.
