2 We are one of the countries top performing NHS Foundation trusts We have one of the largest geographical areas covered of any NHS trust in England We Look after the wellbeing of around half a million people across Northumberland and North Tyneside We are one of the largest employers in the North East, employing almost 9,500 dedicated members of staff In March 2015 we were chosen as a ‘vanguard’ site by NHS England – one of eight sites in the country to be tasked with taking a national lead on transforming care for patients NHCT – Who We Are

3 Services We provide Hospital and Community Health services in North Tyneside Hospital, Community Health and Adult Social Care services in Northumberland.

4 Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital Three general hospitals – Hexham, Wansbeck and North Tyneside Community hospitals in Alnwick, Berwick, Rothbury and Blyth An integrated health and social care facility at Haltwhistle An elderly care unit in Morpeth Outpatients and diagnostic centres at Sir GB Hunter in Wallsend and Morpeth NHS Centre Community teams provide NHS care outside of our hospitals in a variety of settings Sites

5 2012/13 Staff Survey results in NCC and NHCT Approached personally by Director of Community Services and HR Director to investigate further & explore potential solutions Conducted follow up local surveys – identified key issues in specific areas Agreed action plan to address issues and presented to Boards including commitment to Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and subsequently Stonewall Healthcare Index Our Journey with LGBT Staff

6 Agreed high level responsibilities for leading elements of the work and a clear accountability framework (Workforce Committee) Placed programme for meeting needs of LGBT staff /Patients within context of trust responsibilities under Equality Act 2010 Established joint staff network group and routine staff newsletters to gain engagement of LGBT staff to help drive change with agreed “Facility Time” Our Journey with LGBT Staff

7 Revised training programme and induction process to reflect E&D requirements Utilised Stonewall HEI training programme to target senior staff with key messages to build support across senior teams and sites Established E&D Champions programme (over 80 staff) Series of “Open Talks” including LGBT staff (available to all staff) Developed LGBT Coaching/Mentoring offer

8 Our Journey with LGBT Staff Publicised LGBT staff profiles & role models in all staff newsletters as well as visibly supporting key campaigns e.g. LGBT History Month Improved Community/patient engagement alongside staff engagement e.g. supported PRIDE, NPV, NFR, Local Young Trans Group, LGBT Fed Implemented training programme for Social Care Staff and LD staff Developed a “Coming Out At Work” guide for staff and one for managers – available through induction process

9 Where We Are Now Started outside Stonewall top 100 for first year! Top 100 Employer status for past 3 years!! 2 nd Best Healthcare Provider in Stonewall HEI 2015 Regional NHS Leader of Inclusivity of the Year 2015 and 2016 NCC Stonewall Education Champion (partnership)

10 Where We Are Heading Agreed E&D Objective to maintain and improve Stonewall WEI ranking Inclusion in the Monitor Pilot: Leading Cultures that Deliver High Quality Care Incorporation of explicit SMART E&D Objective in all senior management appraisals Implement Reverse Mentoring scheme for middle managers Further series of Open Talks specifically focusing on LGBT issues
