3 OVERVIEW n Population of 109, 000 n Poverty Assessment 1996 – 38% Poor n In 2008 – 30% Poor n Banana Decline as the Impetus for more focused effort on the protection of the elderly n Increased Life Expectancy n Contributory & Non-Contributory Pension Schemes (Public Assistance & Displaced Banana Farmers)

4 Objective: n To improve the quality of life of older persons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines Status: n Policy on Older Persons formulated – Based on Madrid Agreement and Brasilia Declaration n Reflects the synergies between social Protection and Economic Security St. Vincent & the Grenadines National Policy on Ageing – Towards a Human Rights Approach

5 INNOVATION 1) LEGISLATION n Rights-Based Legal and Regulatory Framework for the protection of the Elderly n Inter-sectoral Approach to Elderly Care and Protection n Both elements should work in tandem to ensure sustainability
