1
Heat and Heat Technology
2
Temperature …is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. - the faster the particles, the more kinetic energy.
3
Temp scales Fahrenheit English –Water FP -(32ºF)BP – (212ºF) Celsius metric - Water FP – (0ºC)BP – (100ºC) Kelvin metric - Water FP – (273K)BP – (373K)
4
The Lowest Point Possible Absolute Zero – The point at which ALL molecular motion stops. (No molecules move.) -0K or -273ºC
5
Heat …Is the transfer of energy between objects that are different temperatures. …Is ALWAYS transferred from areas of high temp. to area of low temp. Soda can from fridge in your hand. (Energy goes from your hand to can.) Feels col Cup of hodt tea in your hand. )Energy goes from cup to your hand.) Feels hot`
6
Thermal Energy … is the total energy of the particles in a substance. Measured in Joules (J). Depends on: Temperature of substance How much of the substance you have
7
Specific Heat …is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water 1ºC. (We call this a calorie.)
