1 Discovery of new elements Chapter 5, section 1 Pages 133 - 136

2  Skim through section 1 looking for important events that occurred at the following dates: 1860 (September 1860) 1869 1911 Early 1900s (both groups)

3  Again, skim through section 1 and look for the important contributions of the following individuals: Cannizzaro Mendeleev Moseley Rayleigh, Ramsay, and Dorn

4  The original periodic table was not organized the way that our modern periodic table was organized. Contrast Mendeleev’s periodic table and Moseley’s periodic table.

5  Finally, look at the graphic on p.136. Use this graphic and the text beside it to describe the concept of periodicity.

6  How is an element discovered? 7  We will read the 2 articles together (Element Hunters and Meet 115) and underline important information, etc.  Your task will be to write an essay comparing/contrasting the following: The authors’ different perspectives in writing The difference in quality of content The reason for the format of each article  At the end of your essay, explain which article is more useful for a chemistry student to use to better understand how new elements are created.
