JANUARY 19 TH & 20 TH MEASURING MATTER

INTRO Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of sand? They are the same!

SI UNITS OF MATTER King (Kilo) Henry (Hecto) Died (Deca) By (Meter, Gram, Liter) Drinking (Deci) Chocolate (Centi) Milk (Milli)

WEIGHT A measure of the force of gravity on an object. Your weight can change depending on what planet you are on. The larger the planet, the more gravitational pull. You would weigh 1/6 of your weight on the moon! Measured in Newtons (N). Weight = Mass x Gravity

PRACTICE Find the mass of a 40 N object on Earth. Earth’s gravity is 9.8 m/sec 2 4.1 kg Find the weight of a 30 kg object on Earth. 294 N

MASS The amount of matter something has. Your mass will not change no matter where you are. Mass = Density x Volume

VOLUME The amount of space that matter occupies. Finding the volume of a solid Length x Width x Height Answer is in cm 3 We find the volume of an irregular object by using water displacement. 1 mL = 1 cm 3 Volume = Mass/Density

DENSITY The mass of an object in a given volume. Density = mass/volume Density of H 2 O at room temperature = 1 g/mL Solids- g/cm 3 Liquids- g/mL Gases- g/L

PRACTICE PROBLEMS A block of aluminum occupies a volume of 15 mL and weighs 40.5 g. What is the density? 2.7 g/mL What is the weight of the ethyl alcohol that exactly fills a 200 mL container? The density of ethyl alcohol is 0.789 g/mL. 158 g What volume of silver metal will weigh exactly 2,500 g. The density of silver is 10.5 g/cm 3. 238 cm 3
