Muslims:  Followers of the prophet Muhammad (570-632) arose in Arabia  Conquered much of the Middle East, including holy sites in Jerusalem  Conquered Christian areas of North Africa & Spain  Became a serious threat to Christianity

Chapter 9 - Lesson 4 Schism: a division or split The Schism of 1054  Separation of the Church in the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire  Church in the western part of the Roman Empire became the Roman Catholic Church  Church in the eastern part of the Roman Empire became the Eastern Orthodox Church  The separation continues today. The greatest hopes of the pope and the whole Church today is unity with the Eastern Orthodox Church.
