13 In 1990, Dr. Peter Salovey (Salovey) of Yale University and Dr. John Mayer (Mayer) of the University of New Hampshire coined the phrase “Emotional Intelligence”..as the ability to reason with emotion. Salovey and Mayer identified 4 abilities and skills required for EI and called them the 4 branches of EI. The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) was formulated for assessing the EQ.

14 In 1995, Daniel Goleman (Goleman), got the concept of Emotional Intelligence receive worldwide attention by publishing the book Emotional Intelligence, Why It Can Matter More Than IQ Goleman’s theory of EI has more applications in the workplace. It helps to develop characteristics that distinguish outstanding performers from others at any level of a job. IQ EQ

18 LOW EQ Vs HIGH EQ Signs of low EQ CLUE #1: You can't explain yourself. Can't put together three word sentences starting with "I feel..." Can't tell you why she feels the way she does, or can't do it without blaming someone else. CLUE #2: You can't help yourself. You miss an important opportunity to self manage Can’t control an impulse Your emotion overwhelms your ability to think rationally. CLUE #3: You don’t care of other’s feelings. Has no empathy, no compassion. Uses his intellect to judge and criticize others. Is a poor listener who often interrupts, invalidates and misses important emotions. Focuses on facts and not feelings. CLUE #4 : You don’t feel secure, is unnecessarily defensive and can’t react appropriately. You react violently to something relatively minor. You can’t admit mistakes or apologize sincerely. You feel left out, resentful and victimized.

19 Signs of high EQ LOW EQ Vs HIGH EQ Negative emotions are absent Acts out of desire and not worry, guilt etc. Expresses his feelings clearly and directly Is able to read non verbal communica tion Lets his feelings lead him to healthy choices Balances feelings with reason, logic and reality. Does not let feelings cloud his logic. Makes informed choices. He is independent, self reliant, Motivated He is confortabl e talking about his feelings Is able to use his emotions well while responding He is interested in other people’s feelings,can empathize.
